My Hitler-drawing-skills have gotten better since that first image, so I felt an "updated" version of the idea was in order. I think it turned out alright, despite my awful awful cropping job.
Honestly, I think you capture his aging process better than actual photos of him! I can really see the resemblance between his older/younger self in this drawing-set, which is something I don't see nearly as much when looking at actual photos. Really well done!
Thank you! Photos are odd in that they only capture a split second of someone. However, with ENOUGH photos it's easier to see. I have over three thousand photos of Hitler. And I've looked at them enough to be able to see the differences now, and it's become much easier for me to picture him and even draw him without reference if I want to. But I picked out specific photos for this to reference that I felt captured each part of his life the best, so I'm VERY glad I managed to do it!
You're very welcome! Exactly. It's hard to tell unless you really study them. Since his haircut and moustache are so iconic, he's nearly unrecognizable to most without both, especially since there are so many promotional photos of him with said features. I always love looking at your drawings of Hitler, even your silly ones. I can really tell you've done extensive research on both his and Eva's facial structures and body-types, and it makes me really happy to see a Hitler LOOKING like a Hitler.
That being said, I do find myself being a sucker for the "idealized" and "Phobs-esque" Hitler, but it's more the style itself than the representation of Hitler that draws me, you know? Seeing this is definitely a breath of fresh air.
! Thank you! I really appreciate that. And sadly, for a lot of people just slapping on a moustache and the hairstyle is enough to make Hitler but it's really not. Like everyone else, he had unique facial features and I find very few modern artists actually capture him how he really looked. The shape of the eyes, the nose, the lips and various lines and wrinkles on the face- the shape of the head and jawline and chin. It all needs to be done right in order to actually mimic someone's appearance. I've been working hard on this, specifically for Hitler. It's been my goal for the past year or two to draw Hitler accurately and I'm glad I'm getting him down well enough.
Well. With a case like Phobs... Her style doesn't really work with someone like Hitler. She's an excellent artist, and her style is definitely nice but she hasn't been able to translate Hitler properly to her style, and for someone like me whose studied his face extensively, I find it very bothersome. Her Hitler doesn't look anything like Hitler at all. She can't seem to draw softness, particularly in a character's face- and with her drawings of Hitler- of whom she draws from the mid 30's onwards, it's pretty crucial to get that down because he had a very soft roundness to his face during that time.
Yes, I think so too. Since his features are so iconic, his image can be conjured up by a simple toothbrush moustache and hairstyle. That's all fine and dandy when it comes to satirical depictions of Hitler, but even then, at least SOME attention should be paid to his facial/body structure. (Unless of course, this is propaganda artwork we're talking about like Russia's, then that's totally out the window d: ) Your style of drawing works very well with Hitler's and Eva's features and your bold lines, along with the overall mood of most of your pieces really make everything dynamic and eye-capturing, and that's yet another thing I really enjoy in your work. For me, whenever a piece of yours pops up in my deviantart watchbox or my tumblr dashboard, it's definitely quite a treat.
Exactly, Phobs's style just... doesn't work with someone like Hitler. She has a very art-nouveau style that is excellent for people with beautiful thin faces and thin features and appendages, which Hitler did not have at all d: And I agree, with the thin faces and features comes a certain angularity that just doesn't fit with Hitler's features whatsoever; and you can't characterize someone as a straight up "villain" as Phobs does just with angular features and the moustache and hairstyle. It just doesn't work.
I'm glad you understand! But even caricatures need that element of accuracy. David Low and Dr. Seuss had excellent Hitler caricatures, and all because they exaggerated his real features and made the cartoons believable and silly. Russian propaganda was... kind of odd. They made him look quite rat-like! D:
You hit the nail right on the head there. Phobs' style is perfect for those angular, thin, elongated characters and she renders them quite beautifully and elegantly. She tries to apply this to people like Hitler and it doesn't work because it simply doesn't look right is all. If she could soften her style for characters like Hitler it would work- and indeed I have seen examples where it looks as though she tried this, but it doesn't come out right because it's clear she doesn't really know how to draw it. A good example is this: [link] and this: [link] and even this: [link] I can tell she was attempting to give Hitler a softer look in these, particularly in the thickness of the neck. But it's not that Hitler had a thick neck, it's that there was an accumulation of fat under the chin and jawline, making his neck appear that way. She mistakenly emphases his jawline and cheekbone when his face wasn't thin enough to make it more visible. I find it rather ironic that she can't pull it off with her depictions of Hitler, but she pulled it off with her depictions of people like Goering, Churchill, and Roosevelt in some of her pieces. Another thing I notice is that she doesn't draw his nose right. She draws his nose MUCH to pointy.
Oh dear, I can... Really talk about Phobs and Hitler all damn day. I've done it before.
... ja, I just did that.
Really well done!
