Staying Underground vs. SELLING OOUUTTT
I was at the opening of an artshow two weeks ago, and I was at the same exhibit observing an art discussion about the pieces with a few friends.
The discussion was crap, and the art exhibited was very abstract and contemporary, but interesting- anyway, someone brought up the topic of Underground vs. Selling Out.
A lot of young artists seem to have this complex about "selling out."
To them, they'd much rather stay underground- show their art at small galleries only, not sell much, just have shows with friends, etc. etc. rather than, say, selling their work and having their work at larger galleries elsewhere- or even become *gasp* popular.
It's a subjective thing, ofcourse- but it's silly to me. Why stay underground? If you're an artist and underground, wouldn't you rather want to show your work to as many as you can, to whoever will look, rather than a select few?
The artists at the discussion were all a bunch of pretentious indie folk, but that isn't the norm obviously- what do you think?
Would YOU rather have your work displayed to a select few, stay "underground" so to speak, or would you rather SELL OUT and actually get your work out there?
Would it be better to have your work hang on the wall of your friends basement at a private show, or would you rather your work be on greeting cards at select stores?
Honestly, I don't know. Being underground is so pointless to me. I'd rather get exposure. I'm really lazy so I don't go out and expose my work.

BUT if I had the energy and time and willpower, I would.
